Brantley's Overall 2016 Minor League Rehab #s

as promised, here is the blog featuring Michael Brantley's overall 2016 minor league rehab numbers. if only i was posting this because he was back in the big leagues again. sigh. unfortunately, Michael just had season-ending surgery on August 15. therefore, there is no more wondering about when he will resume his rehab, cause it's done.

this blog combines Michael's rehab numbers from April with his rehab numbers from July. (oddly enough, Michael played as many rehab games this year as he did regular season games with the Cleveland Indians.) he spent time rehabbing with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Lake County Captains, Akron RubberDucks, and Columbus Clippers. i have done a cumulative breakdown of Michael's overall numbers as well as broken down his total numbers from each minor league team he played with.

THERE ARE FIVE SECTIONS OF STATISTICAL BREAKDOWNS IN THIS BLOG. FEEL FREE TO SKIM THROUGH CERTAIN PARTS AND/OR JUST FOCUS ON WHAT YOU MOST WANT TO READ ABOUT.

i'm beginning with how Michael did in his OVERALL 2016 minor league rehab assignment, which incorporates stats from his appearances with the Scrappers, Captains, RubberDucks, and Clippers all together.

Overall 2016 Minor League Rehab Assignment Overview

after a failed attempt at rehabbing during Indians spring training in March, Michael had no choice but to do it in-season. he began his minor league rehab assignment on April 12 with the Triple A Columbus Clippers. he played one game with them before playing four games with the Double A Akron RubberDucks, all done every other day. after that, the medical staff allowed him to play in a set of back-to-back games, which took place with Columbus. upon completion of those, it was decided that Michael was ready to join the Indians, and so he was activated from the DL on April 25. in total, he got 21 at bats in seven rehab games.

Michael only played in 11 games with the Tribe before a setback occurred. ultimately, he went back on the 15-Day DL on May 14 and was later transferred to the 60-Day DL on July 3. it wasn't until July 11 that Michael was able to start another rehab assignment, which just so happened to be during the MLB All Star Break. he first played with the short-season Single A Mahoning Valley Scrappers before getting a scheduled day off. next, he joined the Single A Lake County Captains for one game, and then got another day off. lastly, he returned to Akron to play in two games every other day. sadly, the game he played on July 17 was his final game of 2016.

right shoulder discomfort in the follow-through of his swing led to two MRIs and a hydrodissection to break up scar tissue along the right biceps tendon. when Michael was cleared to restart baseball activities, he went straight to hitting off a pitching machine. the hydrodissection clearly worked for a while, but his pain relief did not last forever. Michael was diagnosed with chronic biceps tendinitis and then after all his doctors consulted, news broke that he would need season-ending surgery, which he had (biceps tenodesis) on August 15. and so his rehabilitation came to its conclusion. Michael played four games and got 13 at bats during his second assignment.

overall, Michael played 11 total minor league rehab games in 2016 and ended up with a .242 batting average, going 8-for-33 at the plate. three of his hits went for extra bases--all doubles--and he drew four walks. on the contrary, he only drove in two runners while leaving 13 men on base. Michael also had six 0-fer games, but still reached base safely in five of those. he mostly bat 2nd in the lineup, though he did bat 3rd once, and started every game in left field. defensively, he played 74 innings in left and acquired one outfield assist.

during his rehab, Michael hit into a lot of ground ball outs, many of which came particularly at the beginning of his rehab in April with some occurring towards the end in July, too. it's logical that he was hitting grounders at first--he was obviously still trying to get his timing back at the plate. but the grounders in July could have been a big sign that his shoulder was indeed bothering him again.

Michael carried out his rehab assignments in only the home ballparks of the Tribe's close affiliates. the Indians wanted to keep him near Cleveland and didn't think it was necessary for him to travel with the kids on their minor league road trips, accounting for why Michael played with four different clubs. moreover, that allowed Michael to spend his scheduled off days with the Indians when they were playing at home.

unlike Major League Baseball, minor league teams provide free audio of their games online. that gave me access to listen to the games (minus one due to technical difficulties on their part, not mine). and, as always, i followed along with them on minor league GameDays as well. so i was able to get all the usual game info that i would if Michael had been playing in the majors. therefore, the rehab breakdowns below are very detailed.

Overall 2016 Minor League Rehab Situational Statistics

Michael had a hit in 5 of the 11 games he played in his overall minor league rehab and reached base safely in 10 games. he had 6 hitless games, but still reached base in 5 of those. Michael had 2 multi-hit games, 1 three+ hit game, and no multi-RBI games. he had at least one RBI in 2 games. he also had 1 go-ahead hit and 1 go-ahead RBI. the teams Michael was on went 7-4 in games that he played in.

in his minor league rehab, Michael bat .233 (7-for-30) against right-handed pitchers and .333 (1-for-3) against left-handed pitchers.

Michael bat .242 (8-for-33) with 2 RBI at home (Eastwood Field, Classic Park, Canal Park, and Huntington Park). he did not play any away games while on his minor league rehab assignments. he hit safely in 5 of the 11 home games he played in and safely reached base in 10 of them.

Michael bat .000 (0-for-5) with runners in scoring position, producing 1 RBI during his rehab. breaking it down, he bat .000 (0-for-1) with RISP and 0 outs, .000 (0-for-2) with RISP and 1 out, and .000 (0-for-2) with RISP and 2 outs.

with 2 outs in an inning, Michael bat .333 (4-for-12), his only real area of success throughout rehab. he hit 1 double and had 1 RBI.

additionally, he bat .182 (2-for-11) with 2 RBI with runners on base and .000 (0-for-1) with the bases loaded with 1 RBI.

lastly, Michael bat .273 (6-for-22) with the bases empty during his minor league rehab. he hit 2 doubles and drew 2 walks.

In The Field

defensively, Michael played a total of 74 innings in left field in 11 minor league games. he recorded 12 putouts and acquired one assist, giving him a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

overall, Michael played just two complete (9-inning) games. he made one outstanding catch in particular during his rehab with the Akron RubberDucks and acquired his one and only assist while playing for them as well. i go into more details about those in the RubberDucks section below. otherwise, nothing of significance occurred during his time in left field with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Lake County Captains, or Columbus Clippers.

Overall Minor League Rehab with the Akron RubberDucks Overview

Michael rehabbed with the Double A Akron RubberDucks in both April and July. in total, he played in six games and faced three AA teams two times each--the Bowie Baysox (affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles), the Binghamton Mets (affiliate of the New York Mets), and the Erie SeaWolves (affiliate of the Detroit Tigers). he mostly bat 2nd in the lineup, though he did bat 3rd once, and started every game in left field.

Michael performed much better with the Ducks in April than he did in July. offensively, Michael bat .211 (4-for-19) with a double, RBI, run, and two walks with Akron overall. defensively, Michael played 42 innings in left, being substituted out early in all six games. he also made one very impressive catch and acquired one outfield assist as the left fielder.

Michael had a hit in 2 of the 6 games he played with the Akron RubberDucks and reached base safely in 5 games. he had 4 hitless games, but still reached base in 3 of those. Michael played a total of 42 innings in left field in six games with the Akron RubberDucks. he had nine putouts, one outfield assist, and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

all the way back in the game on April 16 versus the Bowie Baysox, Michael acquired the lone outfield assist of his minor league rehab assignment. the Ducks were down, 5-0, in the top of the 4th inning. Jeff Kemp led off the inning for the Baysox and was already on 1st base (he reached on a throwing error) when Corban Joseph came to the plate to face Rob Kaminsky. Joseph hit a line drive double to left field on Kaminsky's first pitch that went over Michael's head, so Kemp tried to score from 1st. once Michael got to the ball, he threw it in to shortstop Yhoxian Medina. after Medina caught the ball, he spun around and threw it to catcher Alex Monsalve, who then applied the tag on Kemp for the first out of the inning.

in addition, Michael made an outstanding catch on April 18 with the Ducks. with no outs in the top of the 3rd inning, the Ducks led, 1-0, versus the Binghamton Mets. Xorge Carrillo came to bat against Adam Plutko and hit a fly ball to deep left field after a 2-1 count. Michael tracked it and made a truly spectacular back-to-home-plate, over-the-shoulder basket catch at the wall to record out #1.
